Young Voices of America Tell A Children’s Story

The Young Voices Foundation, which mentors young writers has announced a new writing contest open for US students from grades 3 through 12.

The prize:  $1,500.00!  Nice.

Plus $300.00 in additional prizes.

This is a chance for yor kids “inner writers” to shine through.  It may seem like a homework assignment, but it could be a step towards thier future! I know my kids love to read and they write short stories together all the time.  They really get into it, creating characters and plots, they even talk about it sometimes like how other kids discuss episodes of Hannah Montanna or iCarly.

That’s what a creative mind looks like.

So here’s the rules:

Young Voices of America Tell A Children’s StoryGuidelines

Whether you are a big brother or sister, mom or dad, grandma or grandpa, aunt or uncle, cousin, babysitter, or just the next door neighbor, reading a young child a story is one of the most rewarding activities that one can do.

Children’s stories must appeal to the very young; write your stories for children ages 2 through 5. They can inspire, inform, teach a lesson, or entertain.

Remember your audience; children in the 2 - 5 age groups have short attention spans.  Think about writing your story in scenes or sequences.  Each scene should be no longer than 50 – 100 words for a total of only 500 – 1000 words.  Vocabulary level should be approximately third grade (8 years old), but the story should appeal to a fairly wide age range.

Make us laugh if you can, have fun with your writing and send us your very best work.  No illustrations; stories with illustrations will not be considered.

How to Submit

  • Entries must be original and previously unpublished.
  • Technical ability must be consistent with grade level.  Obvious re-writing by an adult will result in disqualification.
  • Each entry must include name of the author, age and grade level, name of parent or guardian, address, telephone number, and email.
  • Entries containing violent and/or sexually explicit material are not considered appropriate for this contest and will not be considered.
  • Entries MUST be written in English.
  • Send your entry via e-mail to Bobbi.Carducci@youngvoicesfoundation.org  Insert your children’s story in the body of the email – do not send as an attachment. ATTACHMENTS WILL NOT BE OPENED.  If you don’t have access to e-mail: You may submit your entry via USPS to Young Voices Foundation, Young Voices of America Tell A Children’s Story, 17141 Magic Mountain Drive, Round Hill, VA 20141
  • Entries MUST be received by February 3, 2009 (If mailed- postmarked by January 31, 2009).
  • Entries WILL NOT be returned.  It is important that you maintain a copy for your files.
  • Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at a date and time to be determined.  Information about the awards will be made public on the Young Voices FoundationÔ website.
  • Decision of the judges is final.

 WOW! GOOD LUCK!
