Make a PINECONE Birdfeeder!*~* Care about the world around you!
This is one of my most favorite activities during the winter! The kids and I make them all winter long because we are animal lovers and try to help take care of GOD’s creatures during the rough cold months of the year!
Wednesday, December 17, 2008: CARE!
I care about everyone in my world. I care about the people, animals, and plants all around me. When I do something loving, I help make the world a better place.
I can take care of my family by hugging them and helping with chores. I take care of pets and other animals by giving them food and water and treating them with kindness. I take care of nature by recycling. How many ways can I think of to show how much I care.
MAKE A PINECONE BIRD FEEDER!
WHAT YOU NEED:

Making a pinecone bird feeder:
Tie a string around the wider, stem end of the pinecone. Mix ½ cup vegetable shortening (or alternative) with ½ cup oatmeal or corn meal in a mixing bowl until well blended. (This amount will cover one large pinecone or two or three smaller ones.) Thoroughly spread the mixture over the pinecone with a butter knife or back side of a spoon. Pour the birdseed into a pie tin or on a paper plate or cookie sheet. If you choose, you can add any of the optional high-energy foods to the birdseed. Then roll the pinecone in the birdseed until well covered. Suspend the feeder from a tree branch outside.

***I LIKE TO USE PEANUT BUTTER INSTEAD OF LARD !** It’s a great substitute and probably tastes better to the birds!

If you are short on pinecones during the wintertime, then make a bagel wreath feeder instead!
Cut the bagel in half.
Cover the cut side with peanut butter.
Pour some Apple Jacks cereal into a bowl and separate the green pieces from the others.
Crush the green pieces with something heavy: a rolling pin, a skillet, or your hands.
Dip the bagel into the crunched-up Apple Jacks.
Then add Froot Loops or Fruity Pebbles as ornaments.
Tie a string around it and hang it from a tree.
Thanks to the Houston Chronicle for this bagel idea!
