Daytime tv is not something I generally get to watch. If my Tv gets turned on, then it’s when I wake at around 5:15 am and then it’s tuned into CNN. I gather the morning news stories, try to listen about the days stocks and weather and that’s about all the tube I get to absorb.

I used to be a die hard soap and daytime talk show fanatic. I love Regis and Kelly, The View, then Ellen Degeneres then the news on CBS2 .  From 12:30 to 3 pm would be the Young and the Restless, Bold and the Beautiful and As the World Turns. Then at 3:00 Dr. Phil would be on and I would be able to watch him until about 3:25 when I would have to get the kids. By 4:00 pm I would be back home to begin making dinner. By 5:00 pm the replay of Dr. Phil would be on and I would catch the half of the show I missed.  Dinner at 6:00 pm, then one of the cable channels had reruns of Fear Factor which the entire family would watch.  If we didn’t watch that, we watched Wheel of Fortune and jeopardy.

The evening shows depended on what day it was.  That was my line up and what seemed to be my life for a while.  I am much more productive now, but I can certainly appreciate the need for daytime entertainment and discussion of topics which would allow us to concentrate on something other than Jello pudding snacks verses an orange in the kids lunch box.

Kids mess up just about everything. I can clean a room and then 5 minutes later it looks like I was never even in there. I can’t tell you all how many times I have had to clean the same rooms…over and OVER…and Over and over and well, you get the idea. Today is for the mommies who need to clean like me and would like some awesome samples to be able to do it!

Thinking about yesterday’s post, I began to reflect on just how healthy my own kids are.  Do I stock the fridge with the right foods? Are the on hand snacks filling, satisfying? Are they healthy?

I think that most parents as I do myself, provide a mix of in~between snacks. I would like to think that we are healthy eaters. We stay away from the fast foods as much as possible and we don’t drink soda except on special occassions and holidays. Yet, the kids ask for McDonalds and Monster drinks all the time. They crave it! Then, when I offe the alternative, they give me…”THE FACE”. 

You know the face…the “awwwwweeee Mom, I want fat and grease” face.

I think cravings are the issue. Not to mention the commercials from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm, brainwashing our kids to believe that a toaster strudel is better than a pop tart. Can we satisfy sweets and salty wantings and still offer a variety of healthier foods the kids will enjoy and we will be more open to purchasing? I try to have a selection of dry and salty to sweet and juicy snacks on hand. I also try to creat new and exciting menu options the kids look forward to.

Since school began, I have had a blender full of fruit smoothies available. I will get a bag of frozen mixed berries. (It usually contains strawberries, blueberries and black or raspberries), add ice, fruit juice (like orange or a low sugar blend) and a fresh banana. It seems to do the trick. Its fast, simple and clean up is at a minimum.  The kids don’t get a lot of nutrients during the day and I feel it is a good, healthy way to hold the kids over until dinner is ready.

Certainly, eating right should be accompanied by a regimen of exercize. I also suggest trying to take a family walk after dinner. This is an exciting time to walk, especially now for our family being the fall folliage has started and we can collect leaves and pine cones to prepare for autumn crafts!
